How I resolved error code 41 on Windows XP

Saturday, October 10, 2009

I am sure by now you've all heard about how I have been plagued by first a cold that I contracted on a recent trip, then I came home to computer problems and a severe toothache that still knocks me off my feet now and then  - at least until Monday when I make a dentist appointment.

Anyway, the computer problems started .. well I am not exactly sure except that I had been running some different cleaning programs for XP and then suddenly my keyboard was not recognized anymore. In my despair I did system restore (no effect), uninstalled drivers (no effect) and then discovered I couldn't even format
the hard disk without the use of a keyboard! You may be able to do that somehow but I was unaware of how to do it.

So. I went to my dad and told him of my despair and he offered his advice (no effect).
That's when I went online on HIS computer and searched for cures for error code 41 which is what plagued my computer:
device status; windows successfully loaded the device driver for this
hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (code 41).

The drivers were there but the system could not find the hardware. I've never had
anything like that happen to me.

After hours of search I finally found a solution that worked for me. With nothing to lose,
I went into the Windows registry and messed around with some files.
I don't recommend doing it if you know nothing about it - I knew nothing and might as well
have wound up without a computer -
I see the solution I found as a stroke of luck. So here's the solution for error code 41
on my computer:

Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe). (press run and then type regedit or -
if you have no keyboard, use the mouse to navigate to your windows system files
and find it there)

Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro
 l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

After you remove the Upperfilters value and
the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a
particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to
reinstall that software.

Restart your computer. What I did then was start up from my xp disk and delete partition.
Now I have a new
smooth running system - but of course you don't have to format your harddisk if all you have
 is an error 41.
You just need to do a little file work.

By the way, if this solution doesn't work for you, please don't ask me why or enquire about
 other solutions because I
honestly have no idea what to do - I am not a computer genius - I was just lucky that this
solution worked for me
and was asked to share the solution here on the blog.

Hope you found this helpful.
